With climbers still resting and recharging their batteries ahead of the upcoming road season, Team Colombia is collecting victories in the South American velodromes thanks to Juan Esteban Arango. The 27-year-old track rider from Medellin won no less than 4 gold medals at the Juegos Deportivos Bolivarianos, currently underway in Peru.
On the velodrome in Trujillo, Arango proved his condition from the early days of competition with the gold medal won in the race of Individual Pursuit, ahead of countryman Jonathan Restrepo. It was a very useful test, especially in view of 2014 Track World Championships to be held right in Colombia, on Cali velodrome (February 26th – March 2nd), as the individual pursuit is part of the Omnium programme.
After the individual race, another gold came in the team pursuit (along with Juan Sebastian Molano, Arles Castro and Jordan Parra), while two more joys came in the Points Race and in the Madison: in the latter, Arango scored 36 points paired with Countryman Fernando Gaviria, edging the Chilean pair formed by Cabrera and Sepulveda.
Arango’s preparation for the World Championships in Cali will continue in the next round of the Track World Cup, taking place on the Mexican velodrome of Aguascalientes (December 5th – 7th).
